My thinking regarding the iPhone 17 Air’s camera situation: Apple will pitch its main camera as a “2 in 1” 1x wide and 2x telephoto camera as they’ve been doing with the iPhone 16 Series.

If the new 24 megapixel front-facing camera has a wider field of view, then it will be pitched as a “2 in 1” 0.5x ultrawide and 1x wide. “And they’ll all be able to shoot 4K video!”

Just like that, Apple can make the two physical cameras on the iPhone 17 Air feel like four.

For the present. But more RAM usually indicates that there are new features that MUST have that amount of RAM or they don't run, which more quickly pushes older iPhones into obsolescence.

Then I assume it will be the same price as the iPhone 16e.
to be fair, it’s not really that far off from Apple‘s usual RAM upgrade schedule.
they usually bump the ram every 2 to 3 years and… It’s been two years.
and they at least consider 6 GB of RAM to be enough for the iPad 11, which was just introduced a couple months ago. And the bass iPads are some of their longest supported devices, so they at least expect six or so years from now that 6 GB will still be decent enough to run the latest software.

  • The Camera Bar - The iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone 17 Air are both rumored to have a horizontal camera bar that goes all the way across the back of the iPhone. Apple's version will surely look better in real life than in renders and dummy models, but who really wants a bigger camera bump?
I think most people who actually use their phones would prefer a bigger camera bump if the only way it's increasing is horizontally. What no one wants is a camera bump that makes the entire phone sit unevenly by being taller on one corner only.

Agree, except it would still be uneven because the camera lenses rise above the overall camera bump. Now if they balanced that out with something opposite the lenses....

I get that everybody wants a friggin' DSLR in their smart phones now, but this is a hideous example of function over form when Apple had always been so good at making the perfect balance of both. I suppose we accept that a case is a must-have these days, so it will absorb all of the gross changes in elevation that make it ugly so it will remain a monster only in terms of its performance and not also its look.

Nice to hear about a fresh new color (orange/papaya) coming to the Pro iPhone. Looks like the front facing camera will get a nice improvement. Hoping that the zoom remains at 5x and with the new 48MP telephoto lens, 10x sensor crop zoom is possible.

It won't be as bright as the iMac but, I hope it is not as light as the MBA blue. I have been wishing for an orange phone for years. It would be really disappointing if the orange can barely be seen, or confused for another color. I would like for the orange to be as bold as the purple was on the iPhone 14 Pro. I would rock an orange phone naked if it's a good color.
Yeah I have been wanting them to do an orange phone for a long time, too. I'm being cynical but I'm expecting that it'll look more salmon and pinkish than a true orange.

Can you please explain your logic in concluding that the orange color of the phone will be "lame"?
If they make it look too light/washed out, it'll look salmon pink as orange tends to do, especially in certain lighting situations. If they make it too deep, it'll look like copper. What would be awesome is a pure-er orange, like the tangerine color of the iMac and iBook a long time ago, or the orange on the back of the M4 iMac.

The orange-ish color used on the stand, front under the screen, and keyboard and mouse look like pinkish coral on my M4 iMac, kinda doesn't really look orange in real life.

Current rumors are that the uppermost optical zoom level for the 17 Pro Max will stay at 5x, or it might increase a bit to 6x, and the 17 Pro will be boosted from the 16 Pro's 3x to 5x. Last year the rumor was that the 17 Pro Max's upper zoom level might be reduced to 3x, and the 17 Pro might stay at 3x, since apparently that's what many portrait photographers prefer, and (as has been the case all along) all zoom levels other than the camera's native optical zoom would have been simulated by cropping images captured by the 48MP sensor. But apparently Apple backtracked on reducing the 17 Pro Max's optical zoom to 3x after getting heat about reducing it so significantly. As it is, on the iPhones, any zoom level other than the camera’s native optical zoom is simulated, since each lens has a fixed focal length.

Just give us a better battery on the pro/smaller form factor as well. That's where it'd be needed most...

I hate when they separate pro and max. Happens every 2 years. They make the pro worse, then bring parity... then make it worse again . Bloody annoying
I understand what you mean, but saying they make the pro worse is a bit misleading. It makes it sound like Apple actively takes away functionality from the Pro. It's more accurate to say they make the Max better.
