I hate the new way files don’t open up in the Files app anymore. You have to keep clicking on Quick Look to look at the file. I liked the old way where you clicked on a file (pdf, video, document) and it just opened to view. I hope Apple addresses this in the final version and give us a choice on how we want to view our files. Rant over 😂 😂

Actually Apple does provide a choice on where you want to view files… strangely, Mac folks have been clamoring to have the Preview app and here we are with Apple giving us the Preview app.

Therefore opening content in File app don’t exist anymore.. you have to choose whether to open in Preview app or some place else.

I’m just used to pressing the file and it just opening within files. I’ll have a play around as it’s something I need to get used to 😁

That’s been my feeling as well. For my uses, I see no need of the Preview app. It doesn’t do anything, for me, that Files didn’t do. Either way I get to see and interact with the file or document so I don’t mind, just don’t see the purpose.

I have the same feeling. In the Files App, you could already do a lot of things with pdf files, like rotating pages etc. I don't exactly know what Preview adds.

I’m not on the beta, but I had this concern when I heard about the Preview app coming to iPadOS. Seems like it would be an obvious place for Apple to add an option. Maybe enough beta testers will suggest that.

Agreed! This is what happens when Mac folks inject their thoughts onto the iPad platform... and we get the removal of SplifView/Slide Over in favor of the new Windowing System.

Decided to add Preview app to the dock for when I use Files app since thats the new default choice, but most of the time I'm using FileBrowser.

I assume there is, or will be, some function that simulates what Preview does on a Mac. However, on a tablet such as an iPad it really isn’t needed. I also agree with you that Windowing adds nothing for my use that Split View didn’t already do, and I can make it work for me the way Split View did, but why? I’ve read some positive posts about the new feature but I wonder how many new iPad buyers Apple will gain with such features. For the vast majority of iPad users I don’t think these “features” really add anything. For now, I just use Settings to keep things as they’ve always been.

It wasn’t needed (imo). Files app provided the basic function of opening the file that iPad users needed… if I needed more functionality they were other apps I could use, for example.. editing PDFs or images/photos I could open apps that specialized in that area.

I think they should have kept SplitView/SlideOver, then have Stage Manager with all the goodies iPadOS 26 bring (4+ active apps, resize windows and move apps freely). But they listen to Mac folks and wanted a similar experience they have on the Mac platform.

These new features is going to alienate some iPad users… Apple knows the position they are in, trying to keep the iPad the iPad. But the chatter that dominates the tech world… “can the iPad be your main computer?” And these features seem overwhelmingly positive to Mac folks.

And yeah, I still have Stage Manager enabled… been utilizing the Menu more. About the only thing changed for me is adding Preview app to the dock since I think that will be used more.

exactly and I've seen a good number of YouTubers saying 'you can now markup PDFs'. I know they know that you could do this before, but that's literally a quote from a few and I think this idea is now permeating the Apple-sphere that Preview can do a whole bunch of things that we couldn't do before, when I'm not so sure it can, from what I can see. The export feature is new and hopefully we'll be able to shrink the size of PDFs, but I can't think of any other new features really, plus it's now put in a separate app. I think the improvements to Files otherwise looks very positive, but I don't know why we need Preview. I'd have preferred the couple of new features to just been added into Files. Heck just call it Finder and no I don't believe iPads should run MacOS.
